Introduction



Dear students, 

The blog titled “The Joint Master's Program” is aimed to specifically assist the Vietnamese students enrolled in the Joint Master's Program between the University of Houston (UH) and College of Education, Ho Chi Minh National University in their second Phase study at UH. The blog constitutes instructional materials regarding American graduate school application process; guidance for students before their departure for UH; guidance and support for students to  gain academic success and experience American culture and life style within their 1 year stay. Information content in the blog is built into chunks in a top-down hierarchical order. Students are advised to follow this order in their learning of information and steps. Detailed instructions are as followed: 

GETTING STARTED

Students may start off learning about the American education system at this gadget. This will give them an idea where they are in the system, so as to understand the expectations for their academic performance. The video about University of Houston should give students insights about academic recognition and values of the university, as well as cost of study to be in the program. 

THE JOINT MASTER'S PROGRAM


This will give students an overview of the Joint Program, the 5 programs that are offered, and the admission criteria of each program. Students are expected to gain good insights to prepare for their application to UH in the second Phase from here. 


STEPS TO APPLY


The general tips for applying to the U.S. Universities provided are worth learning. However, application to UH graduate program in this context is a very concrete process with 5 precise steps.  Students can get an overview of the process by looking at the "Checklist for UH Graduate application". Details and guidance for each of the 5 steps, as well as information of the standardized tests are found underneath.


PRE-DEPARTURE PREPARATION


This gives students some insights, ideas and personal experience on what to prepare for their first study abroad journey. The information ranks from financial preparation guidance, class enrollment to what to pack in the luggage and accommodation arrangements in Houston. 


STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES @ UH


New arrival students to America are expected to be overwhelmed with language barriers, new school running system, and academic performance pressure besides culture shocks. The "Student support services @ UH" including personal support from me to get students settled down in the first few weeks. The "Academic support services @ UH" aims to assist students' academic success; make their learning process less painful, more enjoyable and valuable. 


LIVING IN HOUSTON


This will leverage students' experience of UH and American life to a higher, more fulfilled level. With its 40,000 students coming from 135 countries in the world, UH is a fantastic place for a vivid social, cultural and sport life right on the campus. Besides, there are so much culture, art, science, outdoors and recreation offers in Houston for students to choose from. The only problem they might have is time to do all these things. 


CULTURE SHOCKS - U.S. CULTURE & HISTORY


These are the baseline knowledge that students might want to read/listen for the sake of better understandings of the U.S. culture and enrich their American experience. 


PRESENTATION TOOLS - WRITING & STYLES GUIDES


These technological presentation tools are free to sign up and are encouraged for students to use even in their Phase 1 in Vietnam. This helps them get closer to technological integration in their learning, one of the requirements for academic success at UH. 


Students who are not familiar with research environment in an American graduate school definitely have so many conventions lined up for them to learn. "Writing & Style Guides" offer students initial support on research writing. Students are strongly advised to also seek for personal support on their writing at the university writing center. 


ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES


One year stay in the U.S. is too short to manage to learn everything. Extend your academic learning goals to achieve more with "Online Learning Resources". A few good things about these sites are: the content is meaningful and inspiring; the websites are well made and well taken care; and they are FREE. Try them to see for yourself.
